How to get free/powerful market research using YouTube polls.

If you were to run the 26 miles of a marathon in the exact opposite direction of the rest of the field, you would still have run a marathon… The problem is that you’d still have to run another 52 miles (in the right direction) to go back and pick up your medal.

This is exactly why reaching out to your audience on a regular basis is the key to finding out if your content is heading in the right direction and hitting the spot.

Work smart, not hard

You can reach out in a variety of ways to yoru audience to get feedback.  You could do loads of keyword research and look at search volumes and send emails to people and say ‘Can you fill out this form? You’ll get a free prize!’… And waste your money, well not waste but there is a cost associated.

Really there is a way that is a lot simpler.

YouTube polls are a really nifty way of getting data from people that want to give it to you anyway.

You can put up to 5 polls into each video, but take it easy there – your audience is only going to be able to handle so much in one go!

48 hours later YouTube will spit the data right back at you.48 hours? That seems quite slow, but I suppose YouTube’s got a lot going on.

Think about it, if your YouTube audience makes up a large percentage of your ideal avatar, you could potentially ask them so much that they could virtually come up with your content strategy for you. Week after week.

Ok there is still going to be work that needs doing and if you don’t have an audience then you’re going to need to build one but getting that feedback could mean the difference between running 26 miles or 52 and I know which one i’d rather do.

Get your audience to do the hard work for you

Every week, just ask them what they’d like to see next week. That means you could lay off all of your strategy team! (But maybe don’t). Asking your audience to do something isn’t cheeky at all, but it is cunning.

And, in fact, they’ll probably value it anyway. This is your most engaged audience. Your regular viewers are already super-engaged with what you do, so if you ask them for help they will give it to you. It will make them feel part of the brand and the whole process.

It’s genius, when you come to think of it!

TIP: Tell them in the video that there is a poll

Just make sure that your audience does know that there’s a poll there, because it doesn’t stick out that much. YouTube haven’t developed a fancy Alarm and Flashing Light ‘There is a poll’ Feature yet, so you need to tell people it’s there as the card can often get lost in videos graphics or great content.

Working with YouTube creators?

If your brand are working with YouTube creators to make content for you, just ask them if it’s possible to include a poll.

If they’ve got 2 million subscribers of your ideal demographic and you don’t include a poll then potentially you’ve lost a huge chunk of potential.

Do include a poll and it will double the value of what you are paying them. And it’s a double whammy of marketing and market research.
